An air fryer is a small fan oven, and it fails in a small number of predictable ways because it only has a few parts doing real work: a heating element, a convection fan, a thermostat and a control board. The single most useful diagnostic costs nothing. Run it and listen. If the fan spins but nothing gets hot, the fault is in the heat path. If nothing at all happens, it is power, the safety switch or the board.
The heat path has a component most owners have never heard of and which explains a large share of dead air fryers: the thermal fuse. It is a deliberate weak link that blows permanently if the appliance ever overheats, usually because the vents were blocked or grease had built up around the fan. Once it goes, the fryer is completely dead with no warning light and no error, which reads exactly like a failed board. It is one of the cheapest parts in the machine.
The other frequent fault is the basket safety switch. The fryer is designed not to run unless the basket is fully seated, and once that micro-switch drifts out of alignment the appliance behaves as though it is broken while every component in it is fine. Grease is the common thread in all of it, which is why a proper service degreases the chamber and fan housing rather than only replacing what failed.
