Why this matters
Hand blenders are built to run in short bursts and are almost always used for longer. Blending a full pot of hot rasam or a batch of tomato puree keeps a small motor at full load for a minute or more at a time, and heat is what eventually kills the winding. The plastic drive coupler between the motor and the blade shaft is designed to be the weak link, giving way before the motor does, which is why a blender that whirs at full speed without the blade turning is a good outcome rather than a bad one.
The second failure route is liquid. The shaft seal sits just above the blade, and once it hardens, steam and splash work their way up the shaft towards the bearing and eventually the motor. The early sign is a squeal or a grinding note when the blade spins, long before anything stops working. Caught at that point it is a seal and a bearing. Left alone it becomes a motor.
Neither repair is expensive, and both are done at your kitchen counter. What is worth knowing is that a blender which trips or smells hot should not be run again to see whether it recovers, because the thermal cut-out that just saved the motor will not protect it indefinitely.

The motor runs but the blade will not spin. What is broken?
Almost certainly the plastic drive coupler linking the motor to the blade shaft. It is designed to shear before the motor does, and replacing it is quick and cheap.
My blender squeals when it runs. Should I keep using it?
No. A squeal at the blade end usually means the shaft seal has failed and moisture has reached the bearing. Using it further pushes the damage up towards the motor, which is the expensive part.
Is a burnt-out motor worth replacing?
Sometimes. On a mid-range or premium blender a motor replacement is worthwhile; on an entry-level model it can approach the price of a new unit, and the technician will tell you that plainly rather than quoting for it anyway.
Do you repair the chopper and whisk attachments too?
Yes. Chopper bowls, lids, gearboxes and whisk attachments are all serviceable, and replacements are available for most common models.
Can I put the blender shaft in water to clean it?
Only the detachable blending arm, and only as far as the manufacturer allows — never the motor body. Water working up past the shaft seal towards the bearing is the second most common way these fail, after the coupler, and it starts with washing the arm more aggressively than it was designed for.
How long can I run a hand blender continuously?
Most are built for short bursts of under a minute with a pause between, and the manual for your model gives the exact figure. Blending a full pot of hot rasam in one go is the classic way to overheat a small motor, and the burning smell people notice afterwards is the winding, not the food.
Is it safe to blend hot liquid directly in the pan?
It is what these are designed for, but keep the guard fully submerged before switching on and lift it off the base of the pan slightly. Steam and splash driven up the shaft is what hardens the seal over time, so a blender used mostly on hot food will need that seal sooner.
My blender only works if I hold the button at an angle. What is that?
A worn speed or turbo switch, or a cord failing where it enters the body. Both are inexpensive and are replaced on site. It is worth fixing rather than working around, because a failing switch in a wet-hand appliance is an electrical risk as well as an annoyance.
