A chopper is a small motor driving a blade through a gearbox in short, violent bursts, and the part that absorbs that punishment is the gear train. Onions, ginger and hard vegetables load the blade unevenly, and every start is effectively a shock load. Nylon gears are designed to strip before the motor does, so a chopper that runs at full speed while the blade sits still has usually done exactly what it was designed to do.
The most common reason a chopper appears completely dead is not the motor at all. Every electric chopper has a safety interlock that prevents the blade turning unless the lid is fully locked, and once that micro-switch drifts, wears or fills with food residue, the appliance will not start no matter how good the motor is. It is a small alignment or a cheap switch, and it is the first thing worth checking.

My chopper will not start at all. Is the motor dead?
Often not. Every chopper has a lid safety interlock that blocks the motor unless the lid is fully locked, and a worn or clogged interlock switch stops a perfectly good appliance. It is the first thing the technician checks.
The motor runs but the blade does not move. What broke?
The nylon gears in the drive train have stripped. They are meant to fail before the motor does, and replacing the gear set is a standard repair.
Can chopper blades be sharpened or replaced?
Yes, both. A dull blade makes the motor work far harder for a worse result, so it is worth doing before the extra load damages the gears.
Is a cracked bowl worth replacing?
Yes, where the manufacturer supplies a replacement. A cracked bowl leaks and can also stop the lid seating properly, which then prevents the safety interlock from engaging at all.
My chopper leaves big pieces and mush in the same bowl. Why?
A dull blade, an overfilled bowl, or both. A blunt blade pushes food around rather than slicing it, so what is near the blade turns to paste while the rest stays whole. Sharpening or replacing the blade fixes the result and takes load off the gears at the same time.
Can I chop hard things like ginger, turmeric and dry coconut?
Within what your model allows, in short pulses rather than one long run. Hard items shock-load the gear train, and nylon gears are designed to strip before the motor does — which is why a chopper that runs but does not turn is usually a gear job rather than a dead appliance.
Is the bowl and blade dishwasher safe?
