Why this matters
A built-in hob is not a gas stove that happens to sit in a hole in the counter. The burners are sealed into the top, the ignition runs on mains electricity rather than a battery, and the gas manifold and valves are underneath the worktop where nothing is visible. That combination is why hob work belongs with a trained technician and not with a general handyman: the electrical ignition circuit and the gas path have to be checked together.
The most frequent complaint is a burner that clicks without lighting. That is usually a blocked flame port or a dirty electrode rather than a gas supply problem, because spillage runs directly into the ports on a flush hob and dries there. A related symptom is a flame that lifts away from the burner or burns yellow and sooty instead of blue, which points at the air-gas mixture and is worth attending to promptly, since incomplete combustion is what deposits soot on your vessels.
Gas smell is different from every other symptom on this page, and it is not something to schedule around. I can smell gas near my hob. What should I do right now?
Close the cylinder or line valve immediately. Do not switch anything electrical on or off, including lights and exhaust fans. Open windows and doors to ventilate the room, leave the hob unused, and call us or your gas supplier straight away. Do not try to find the leak yourself.
My hob clicks but the burner does not light. Why?
Usually a blocked flame port or a dirty ignition electrode, both of which come from spillage drying in the burner. It is far more common than a gas supply fault, and it is resolved during a standard service.
How is a hob different from a regular gas stove?
A hob is built into the countertop with sealed burners and mains-powered auto-ignition, so servicing covers the electrical ignition circuit as well as the gas path and the valves underneath the worktop.
How often should a built-in hob be serviced?

One burner is much weaker than the others. Why?
Almost always a partially blocked flame port or a burner cap sitting slightly out of seat, both from spillage that has run into the burner and dried there. On a flush hob that happens far more readily than on a freestanding stove, which is why hobs benefit from servicing on a schedule.
My hob keeps clicking after the burner has lit. Is that a fault?
Yes, and it is worth fixing. Continuous clicking normally means moisture or spillage is bridging an electrode, or a flame-sensing thermocouple is not registering that the burner has lit. Cleaning and drying the electrode assembly resolves most cases.
Do you service glass, steel and brass burner hobs?
All three, including toughened glass tops, stainless steel tops and both brass and forged burners. Glass is cleaned without abrasives, and brass burners are cleaned rather than wire-brushed, which is what pits the surface and makes blockage worse afterwards.
