Why this matters
An iron spends its life cycling between room temperature and around two hundred degrees, several times in every session, and it is the thermostat that does the cycling. That single component is the reason an iron either works well for a decade or ruins clothes within a year. When contacts inside it pit and stick, the iron stops regulating: it either fails to reach the temperature the dial promises, or it does not stop at it.
The scorching complaint is worth understanding, because it is usually blamed on the wrong part. A soleplate that burns fabric at a low setting is not too powerful. Its thermostat has stopped cutting out, so the plate keeps climbing past the setting until something makes it stop. Continuing to use it on a lower dial position does not help, because the dial is exactly the thing that no longer works.
Steam irons add water to the problem, and Bangalore water leaves scale inside the vents and the chamber behind them. My iron is burning clothes even on a low setting. What is wrong?
The thermostat has almost certainly stopped cutting out, so the soleplate keeps heating past the dial setting. Turning the dial down will not help, because the dial is the part that has failed. Stop using it on good fabric until it is repaired.
Why is my steam iron spitting water instead of steam?
Scale in the steam chamber and vents, which is common on Bangalore water. Water passes through before it has fully turned to steam. Descaling the chamber and clearing the vents normally fixes it.
Can a damaged power cord be replaced?
Yes, and it should not be taped or ignored. The cord flexes constantly at the entry point and that is where the insulation fails first, on an appliance you hold in your hand.
